THE BASICS OF CANVA

Updated: Jun 2, 2023

Canva is a marketer's best friend, and we're no different. The easy-to-use creative design platform has knocked other competitors out of the way, including Adobe Photoshop which previously took the crown.

Canva is well-known for its fool-proof tools and systems, and the ability to make basically anyone with beginner computer skills into a moderate graphic designer. Whether it's templates you're using, or braving new designs from scratch, Canva is one of the best tools out there right now, here's a quick rundown of how to use it...

1. DIMENSIONS

When you first open Canva, you're greeted with a bunch of options of which size, shape and design you'll be choosing for your creative piece. The great thing about Canva is that it has sizes ready-set for basically everything - from Instagram posts to Reels, LinkedIn headers, videos and presentations.

Knowing the measurements of your design is key to ensuring it'll work for your chosen platform, not be cropped and fit exactly how you wish it to.

2. TEMPLATES

Arguably one of the best features of Canva - its templates. From neutral backgrounds to funky shapes and colours, there's a template for nearly every style and tone, and they can be a great way of kickstarting your creativity and developing ideas.

We must say though, there's nothing worse than accounts that consistently use Canva templates, it can be quite obvious. In our opinion, templates are best used to get ideas and grab tips and tricks from, rather than using them directly for designs.

3. DESIGN TOOLS

Canva has a multitude of options available as tools - whether you're looking for text with different fonts, pictures, videos, audio, graphics and more, Canva has it all. Another benefit of Canva is its endless tutorials, explaining exactly how to utilise each tool and ensuring you're getting the most out of the platform.

4. CREATIVITY

Canva is a brill platform for making your visions come to life, so let your creativity flow and explore all of the different options available.

Creativity can be challenging sometimes, but utilising a platform that has so many options and resources can make it a lot easier. If you're struggling with where to begin, look for inspiration on social media accounts, or take a look at templates we've mentioned before.

In a time when many social accounts are starting to look the same, don't be afraid to branch out with your designs and develop them however you'd like to.

5. SHARING

Sharing your designs is exciting - all your hard work can now be appreciated by others! It's a good job Canva gives you ample options of what type of file you'd like to export, and which platforms you can share directly to.

Exporting has even been easier.

It goes without saying that Canva has taken the marketing world by storm, and most will continue using Canva for the foreseeable.
