OUR FAVOURITE EVER HALLOWEEN CAMPAIGNS

Updated: Jun 2, 2023

Halloween is just around the corner and we are SO excited to share our favourite Halloween campaigns...

With the spooky season well underway, brands are taking advantage of cool graphics, brilliantly written copy and some (slightly obvious) digs at competitors.

Here are our top five favourite Halloween campaigns so far...

1. MCDONALDS - TRICK OR CHEESE?

Starting off with the one and only - McDonalds. We all know them and we all love them, but this Halloween campaign, which first launched in Finland in 2019 really made our day.

The iconic quarter pounder got a spooky glow-up in this ad, no costume needed. From the brilliant use of graphics to kind-of still appetising stringy cheese, this Halloween campaign definitely deserves a place in our top five.

2. HEINZ - TOMATO BLOOD

Isn't this just SO fun?! We've all used ketchup as fake blood at some point in our lives, whether intentionally or accidentally, after eating one too many spooky hotdogs at childhood Halloween parties...

We love the use of the iconic Heinz bottle shape behind Dracula too - the nail in the coffin, you might say!

3. HOVIS - JAMMY KNIFE

Another oldie but goodie, this sticky situation from Hovis. First landing in 2013, this campaign is timeless and gives everything that it should - subtle, spooky and spectacular.

The ad was originally created as part of a wider campaign which focused on positioning Hovis as a bread for all occasions - what's more Halloween than a potential crime scene at breakfast?!

4. MR KIPLING - TRICK OR TREATING IS BETTER WITH CAKE

What a brilliant campaign - from the half-cut cherry Bakewell to the twisted text smile.

This creative is so simple yet incredibly effective - who knew a cherry Bakewell could be so scary?!

5. SMILE MOVIE - CREEPY SMILES

Not going to lie, this one is our ultimate favourite. It takes guerilla marketing to a whole new level, gaining a huge amount of earned media.

To give some context, the new horror movie 'Smile' is all about a therapist who witnesses a traumatic event and begins going through extremely weird experiences, including seeing people possessed with a smile on their faces.

It's not been proven that the actors were hired directly by the 'Smile' producers but there were multiple people spotted at several baseball games in America with the same horrifying smiles while wearing tops saying 'Smile'... creepy, right?

Of course, this went viral on multiple social media platforms, especially TikTok, where the movie gained a large amount of attention and commotion.

6. BONUS: MCDONALDS - #TRICKOREAT

Love the wordplay here but due to circumstances no one at McDonald's could have planned for, their promoted hashtag is going down about as well as the ice cream machine being broken.

#TrickorEat refers to a week of offers that McDonalds are running via their app however after tweeters have hijacked the hashtag claiming it's in bad taste given the current cost of living crisis, especially after Rishi Sunak (of Eat Out to Help Out fame) was announced as our new PM yesterday.

A real Halloween horror for McDonalds or a classic overthink from the Twitter hivemind?

What do you think?

Happy Halloween! 🎃
